PRESCHOOL FAMILY GUIDE
-
• David’s anointing wasn’t an empty ceremony. Though King David wouldn’t sit on the throne until many years after his anointing, the Holy Spirit came upon him in power from that day on.
• David was the smallest and youngest of his eight brothers. It surprised everyone when Samuel anointed him as the future king.
• In 1 Samuel 16—17, the Philistines paralyzed the Israelites with the fear of being conquered and destroyed. As the Philistines sent out their mightiest warrior, Goliath, the Israelites questioned how they would overtake the Philistines.
• It’s possible that Goliath could have been as much as nine and a half feet tall!
• God’s strength can conquer any foe, no matter how powerful.

This week, ask your children, “If you could choose anyone to be king or queen for a day, whom would you choose and why?” Then read 1 Samuel 16:7–13 and discuss what God looks for in a king. Whether or not you’re familiar with the passage, do a fresh read of 1 Samuel 17 from your family’s favorite translation. Then retell the story in your own words to your children, knowing what will be appropriate and interesting to them. Help your children understand that God was truly the one who defeated Goliath, working through David.
After reading the Scripture passage, discuss these questions together:
• How did God show his strength through David?
• What kinds of things can God do with His strength?
• How might God want to use His strength in your life?
These questions can easily extend into the rest of the week. Look for opportunities to bring conversations about how God Is Strong into your everyday life as a family.

Your child may enjoy looking at his er reflection. Allow him to see his own pow by flexing his muscles in a mirror.

ELEMENTARY FAMILY GUIDE
-
• Hundreds of years after King David, King Ahab ruled over Israel. The Bible says that King Ahab “did more evil in the eyes of the Lord than any of those before him” (1 Kings 16:30).
• Because of King Ahab’s choices, God sent a drought over all of Israel that would prepare His people’s hearts for the contest on Mount Carmel—a competition to prove, once again, that God is the one and only.
• God answered Elijah in the contest by sending fire from heaven and burning up the sacrifice that Baal could not consume.
• After this contest, God sent rain at Elijah’s request, showing that He—not Baal—controls the weather.

Create a “Masterpiece Theatre” setting in your home. Find a large, comfy chair and set a lamp next to it. Gather your family and tell them that this part of The Big God Story is filled with excitement. Share with them that it ends with God being the Hero as He shows His power and proves that He is the one and only God. Read 1 Kings 18:16–39 aloud—dramatically! Once you’ve gone through the passage, ask your children to tell you why God was the Hero in this part of The Big God Story.
After reading the Scripture passage, discuss these questions together:
• What did Elijah pray before he made a sacrifice to God?
• Why did Elijah cover the altar with water?
• How did the people respond to God’s display of power?
These questions can easily extend into the rest of the week. Look for opportunities to bring conversations about God is the One and Only into your everyday life as a family.into your everyday life as a family.
